Recipe: tag repeat customers
Every customer with 2 or more orders gets the tag repeat, and new repeat buyers get it when they place their second order.
The settings
- Rule name
- Repeat customers
- Condition scope
- Customer
- Field
- number of orders
- Operator
- >=
- Value
- 2
- Action
- Add tag, Tag the customer
- Tag value
- repeat
Steps
- In your Shopify admin, open Apps, then MSS Order Tagger: Auto Tags; it opens on the Tag Rules page. Select Create rule.
- Select Start from scratch. Enter the Rule name first, because the app does not save a rule without one ("Rule name is required."). Then enter the rest of the settings above: Add condition for the condition, Add outcome for the action.
- Under Preview, choose Recent sample and Customers, select Run preview, and check that customers with one order show No match.
- Select Create rule. The rule is on as soon as it is saved.
- Optional, on the Growth and Pro plans. In the Tag Rules list, select the rule's name to open Edit tag rule. Then select "Apply to existing store history", then "Start backfill", to apply the rule to existing customers and the last 60 days of orders, so customers who already qualify get the tag.
Good to know
- Shopify Flow can do this too, with an Order created trigger and an Add customer tags action. Flow's manual runs handle up to 50 records at a time (source: Shopify Help: Running workflows manually in Shopify Flow), so for customers who already qualify, use several runs or a bulk edit in Customers.
- Use a short lowercase tag with no spaces if other tools filter on it.
